Ubisoft, a tech giant in the gaming industry, is continuing to dip its toes in the world of NFTs. The studio is developing Champion Tactics from the ground up, placing NFTs at the forefront, marking it as their first original Web3 game.
Ubisoft’s Foray Into Blockchain

It goes without saying that Ubisoft has been experimenting with NFTs and blockchain technology, as evidenced by their recent partnership with Immutable. From its early Ghost Recon NFTs to now Champion Tactics, it will be interesting to see how Ubisoft will try to innovate in the field of blockchain technology.
About Champion Tactics
Ubisoft first revealed Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles back in late June 2023. Champions Tactics is a player-versus-player tactical role-playing game that features figurine-like characters and a gothic dark fantasy aesthetic. The official Champions Tactics website states that the game will be available on PC early in 2024 and will utilize the game-centric chain Oasys.
NFT Drop Details
Champion Tactics’ NFT consists of Warlords which function as PFP NFTs for collectors. Players can customize their in-game profiles by applying Warlords NFT art.
Early access to purchase up to five of the playable NFT characters in the game — known as Champions — will be provided to Warlords NFT collectors for free. Accordingly, Ubisoft will be selling in-game profile avatars as NFTs (the Warlords) and releasing the game’s characters (the Champions) as collectible NFTs.
The Warlords are a collection of 9,999 pixelated PFPs that will be given away for free on Ethereum in Q4 of 2023. They will serve as tickets for the future mint of the playable champions, but they won’t be in-game characters themselves.
The Warlords mint will grant first access to those determined by contest entries and community involvement. Once all 9,999 Warlords have been minted by the public, the mint will open to the public. Players will have access to 8,000 Warlords, while Ubisoft will retain 999 for giveaways. Additionally, 1,000 Warlords will be dispersed via the Oasys blockchain, the platform set to host the Champions Tactics launch in early 2024.
To be eligible for minting, players must have a cryptocurrency wallet, a Ubisoft account, and be at least 18 years old.
Ethereum gas fees can vary greatly depending on smart contract design and network activity, so users should be prepared to pay anywhere from $5 to several hundred dollars in ETH to cover transaction fees.
Champion Tactics Gameplay
Champion Tactics has very little information about gameplay. However, we do know that players will select three champions from their collection before every PVP battle. Ubisoft says that there are thousands of different champions to collect.
Oddly, it looks like players will need to obtain champions in order to play the game, and it won’t be free to play technically. But since “there will be a free champions drop at launch,” Ubisoft implies that early access might be provided without charge.
